Wow.
My fileden.com account got deleted. My entire site pretty much got wrecked.
I'm considering whether or not to cut my losses and move on or try to pick up the flag and keep on marching... thoughts?

tortoise
"Tortoise's almost entirely instrumental music defies easy categorization, and the group gained significant attention from their early career. The members have roots in Chicago's fertile music scene, playing in various indie rock and punk groups. Tortoise was among the first American indie rock bands to incorporate styles closer to Krautrock, dub, minimalism, electronica, and various jazz styles, rather than the standard rock and roll and punk that had dominated indie rock for years.

Some have cited Tortoise as being one of the prime forces behind the development and popularity of the so-called "post-rock" movement. [1][2]progressive rock[1]. Others, however, have criticized Tortoise's music as being derivative of

Other groups related to Tortoise include The Sea and Cake, Brokeback, Shrimp Boat, Slint, Isotope 217, and the Chicago Underground Duo. Tortoise records on the Thrill Jockey label."

Here are a couple random mp3's from Tortoise.

badly drawn boy- hour of the bewilderbeast

"Badly Drawn Boy is an independent singer-songwriter, born Damon Gough October 2, 1969 in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, although the family returned to Bolton, Lancashire before Gough reached the age of one. Gough chose his stage name from a character that appeared in the cartoon show "Sam And His Magic Ball" which he saw on TV at a party in Trafford, Manchester in 1995. Before he thought of using this name he made some 'business cards', each one unique, with a printed picture of a drawing by his nephew, and a small collage by Gough. This was then laminated and given out to friends and people at clubs in Blackburn and Manchester.

His 2000 album The Hour of Bewilderbeast won a prestigious Mercury Prize. He also composed the soundtrack to the movie "About A Boy" (starring Hugh Grant), based on the Nick Hornby book of the same name. His third album, Have You Fed The Fish?, was released in 2002. One Plus One Is One, his fourth album, was released in 2004."

Badly Drawn Boy is pretty strange music, but these track are pretty normal and catchy. The mp3s are from the album "Hour of the Bewilderbeast."

Tunng! [Jul. 17th, 2007|02:21 pm]
tunng- mother's daughter and other songs

"Tunng consists of three guitarists/songwriter/vocalists, plus a female vocalist/percussionist, a guy doing electronics and turntable samples, and a bloke who plays the seashells with his toes. Some people say their brand of 'new folk' could be the next big thing.

They're helping to define a new wave of psy-folk, but unlike the traditional instruments of bands like Charlambides and Jack Rose, they combine all the good elements of the 60's "Summer of Love" sound from San Francisco with modern recording productions, and little electronic tweaks and sounds and samples that add a wonderful quirky and sometimes psychedelic edge."

Usually I don't like posting the same band as any of the blogs that I follow within the same week, but one listen to these guys and I couldn't get them out of my head. I'm sure they'll be on my ipod for a while to come.

Also, sorry that updates have been a bit slow lately. I'll try to speed things up a little, but can't make any guarantees.

Today's mp3s are from the album "Mother's Daughter and Other Songs"

caspian- you are the conductor

"Caspian is an instrumental rock band from Beverly, Massachusetts. The band formed in Autumn of 2003 and played their first concert in August of 2004. Characterized by towering walls of sound, oceanic guitar work, and vicious rhythmic elements, Caspian is a band that has gained widespread attention for the multi-dimensional emotionality of their recorded catalogue, a blistering live show and a commitment to national touring within the United States. After releasing their debut EP "You Are The Conductor" (Dopamine, 2005) to critical applause, the band spent most of 2006 touring The United States and Canada and writing their debut full-length record "The Four Trees" (Dopamine, 2007). "The Four Trees" was released in the U.S. on April 10 and in Japan on May 2. Caspian are currently touring in support of "The Four Trees" and have already begun writing their sophomore album due for release sometime in 2008."

Caspian is another great post-rock band that is definitely worth giving a listen to. Today's mp3s are from the album "You Are The Conductor."

Belle & Sebastian! [Jul. 11th, 2007|09:20 am]

dear catastrophe waitress

"Belle & Sebastian are an indie-pop band from Glasgow — Led by guitarist/vocalist Stuart Murdoch, the seven-piece band has an intimate, majestic sound that is equal parts folk-rock and '60s pop. Murdoch has a gift for not only whimsy and surrealism, but also for odd, unsettling lyrical detail which keeps the songs grounded in a tangible reality.

Based in Glasgow, Scotland, Belle & Sebastian released their first two albums in 1996 at the peak of the chamber pop movement. At first, some critics in Britain's music weeklies tied the band into the subgenre, yet the group was too pretty, too delicate, to bear that label. Through their first two years of public existence, the band shielded their personalities, submitting publicity photos featuring a girl that wasn't in the band and reluctantly posing for photo shoots. Furthermore, they performed in odd venues, playing not only the standard coffeehouses and cafes, but also homes, church halls, and libraries."

You may have heard of Belle & Sebastian but never heard them. You may have heard them, but not heard enough. You may never have heard of them at all. To remedy any of these problems here are two mp3s from the album "Dear Catastrophe Waitress."

pelican- city of echoes

"It becomes fitting, upon listening to Pelican's music, that the band hails from Chicago. When Tortoise and their contemporaries ushered in a new wave of instrumental music over a decade ago from the Windy City, it was a pastiche of genre-defying sound, simultaneously cohesive and expansive in influence. Similarly, Pelican's songs touch on so much from the canon of rock music. Yet they have refined their own sound over the course of their career—perhaps nowhere as progressively and courageously as on their third full-length, City of Echoes."

Pelican is a great post-rock band to chill to. Today's mp3's are from the album "City of Echoes."

Pink Martini! [Jul. 5th, 2007|10:02 am]

pink martini- hey eugene

"“Pink Martini is like a romantic Hollywood musical of the 1940s or 50s – but with a global perspective which is modern,” says founder and artistic director Thomas M. Lauderdale. “We bring melodies and rhythms from different parts of the world together to create something which is new and beautiful.”

The Portland, Oregon-based ‘little orchestra’ was founded in 1994 by Lauderdale, a Harvard graduate and classically trained pianist, to play political fundraisers for progressive causes such as civil rights, the environment, affordable housing and public broadcasting. In the years following Pink Martini grew from four musicians to its current twelve, and has gone on to perform its multilingual repertoire on concert stages and with symphony orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Canada and the United States."

Pink Martini is quite a catchy band. Once you've listened to any of their songs a few times, you'll find yourself humming/singing them all the time, even if you can't speak whatever language that song is in. Today's mp3s are from the album "Hey Eugene."

sky blue sky

"Rising from the ashes of venerable alt-country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, Jeff Tweedy has guided his band's transformation from rootsy americana revivalists to avant-garde guitar experimentalists and back again. Along the way, they have played darkly-themed 1970s pop-inspired rock songs to sprawling rock epics.

In 2002 Wilco released the widely popular album "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot". The album received excellent reviews including a perfect 10.0 from http://pitchforkmedia.com."

So this week's updates have been/will be a bit slow because I usually update the site while I'm bored at work, but this week I've been working at work (go figure). Hopefully the soothing tunes of Wilco will fix all this. Today's mp3s are from the album "Sky Blue Sky."
